"The show must go on!" The Citys know this saying better then anyone. A couple of weeks ago The Citys had shows left and right. From venues such as Hurricanes to opening up for Hinder, they were busy as musicians here in the valley can be. However, with the absence of their drummer due to illness, the band was heading into a slump. But on April 13, 2007, they would prove that not even an illness can keep them off the stage. In front of fans and individuals new to the sound of the band, The Citys gave their first acoustic performance. With mellow vocals and raw acoustics, the band captured the attention of everyone in the audience. Not bad for three "boys" sitting on stools armed only with a guitar.

Under A Burning Sky

One can never be too young to be in a band now-a-days. The three members of Under A Burning Sky can be considered the "babies" in this year's 2nd Annual Battle of the Bands at Fort Brown. Not only are these 15 and 16 year olds competing with those who are at least four years older, but against bands that have been together for longer then a year. The event will be the band's first competition and dare I say, it's going to be no picnic. Seen as the underdogs, Under A Burning Sky will have their work cut out for them.

Battle of the Bands!!

The Film Productions Club will we hosting the 2nd Annual Battle of the Bands at Fort Brown. It is a perfect opportunity for local bands to show what they have to offer and it is time that the community shows their support. With the Brownsville Society of Performing Arts and the Brownsville Film Commissions gladly sponsoring the Film Productions Club, this battle will surely "rock your faces off ".

Avid baby Avid!

There is nothing like a great show over the weekend to make the upcoming week seem dull. This past Saturday at Chapa's Bar, Avid took the stage ready to give a killer performance. With the hands of the clock nearly reaching 1:30 a.m., lead singer Michael Gonzalez showed no sign of fatigue. Their style of music varied greatly compared to the previous bands that performed earlier. They had a mixture of jazz and swing with just the perfect amount of rock. Fans were dancing and singing with complete abandon even as Gonzalez pulled them on stage. I, myself, was swept away by the energy that Avid possessed. It is rare to find a band with a unique presence here in the valley, and Avid is one of those rare ones.

Tragedy-n-April

Brownsville is busting with local talents. It seems like every corner we turn there is a group of aspiring musicians waiting for their big break. The ages range from some as young as 13 to those well over 35. However, just because the drive and determination is there, does not always guarantee that success will be in sight. The music industry is a brutal place. Talent alone is sometimes not enough. All musicians know the simple truth. If you want to make it in the industry then you have to be willing to put yourself and your work out there for the brutal world to criticize. One band in particular is doing just that. On March 16, Tragedy-n-April, along with another local band, The Citys, will be opening for one of rock music's rising bands, Hinder.

Tragedy-n-April's style of music falls in the alternative/rock genre. Their music has a soft, mellow touch to it with gentle guitar riffs and vocals that can put anyone into a relaxed state.

Aside from the actual release of a band's CD, concerts and shows are the most highly anticipated event. Adoring fans thrive on the opportunity to be front and center as a band takes the stage. There is nothing more thrilling then being only a couple of feet away from the artists that create the music that pulls at your heartstrings.

Music, the ultimate form of escape, is thriving for release here in the valley. It is screaming for attention, embedding itself into the hearts of today's youth. It it their expression of rebelion, of heartache, of happiness, of life.

Music is my escape, my freedom.
